Dressed to impress but rich in features and healthy in sound, H.H. Scott’s three-CD SMV300 stereo system is truly unique in not only appearance but construction. The CD changer employs three independent CD drives configured in a vertical array. The fact that the drives operate independently–with separate servo mechanisms and separate lasers–lets it switch between discs quickly, rather than having to first stop playback on the first disc, load a new disc, and then find and play the first track from the next disc, as most carousel changers operate.

The system’s stylish, motorized door is designed to slide smoothly open with the press of a button from the remote or from the system’s front panel. Even better, however, is a cool palm sensor that will open the door as soon as it senses your hand moving toward the door.

Playback options include repeat (one track, one disc, or all discs), random play, 40-track memory sequencing, and intro scan (which plays the first 10 seconds of each track to help you find the one you want). Drift off to sleep using the handy sleep timer, and/or set the system’s alarm clock to wake you up to your favorite radio station or a motivating CD.

Three defeatable preset equalizer settings (rock, pop, and classic) let you tailor the sound to your taste, your program, or your room. A stereo analog (left/right RCA) auxiliary input lets you hook up a second source such as a cassette deck, minidisc player/recorder, or MP3 player, and a choice of stereo analog and digital (Toslink optical) outputs facilitates connection with a CD recorder, MD recorder, or cassette deck.

When it’s new, this is a great stereo. Everything works as advertised, and the audio presets put out pretty good sound in a small or medium-size room.

However, after a couple of years, mine started to break down. First the sensor for the doors went out. Then the motor for the doors went out, and they have to be pushed open and closed by hand. Around the time the doors started to go, it became very finicky with CDs. I thought this was to do with a dirty lens or dirty/scratched discs, but neither was the case. Several minutes of shuffling CDs around and opening/closing doors is required to get even one CD to play.

At , this is a good, basically disposable CD player. Don’t expect long-term value at this price or from this manufacturer. But while it works, it’s a pretty sweet, good-looking system. I still get compliments on the looks of it, even though it hardly works anymore.

There are several similar complaints for this item, the primary one being that when you put CDs in, they don’t play. Which is why anyone would be upset after shelling out the money for this albeit cool-looking stereo. I actually paid closer to retail price for this item, almost 0 if you include shipping. I used the stereo a few times and then it simply stopped playing CDs at all. I am very upset and disappointed that repair costs are prohibitive enough to force me to buy another stereo entirely. At least the speakers still work; maybe they are salvageable. Otherwise, I would caution NO ONE to buy this piece of you-know-what unless you enjoy the sensation of money being thrown away.

I recently received this stereo as a Christmas gift. Two months after Christmas, it arrived. To my dismay, the first CD wouldn’t play. It wouldn’t even recognize a CD was in it after a preliminary spin of all 3 discs. While it is a pretty stereo to look at, it seems like a lot of people had similar problems with it. And for a CD player, it could be a lot more powerful. I’m returning mine for a gift certificate.

I have always trusted Panasonic to make quality products, even recently purchased a Panasonic plasma HDTV – TV’s maybe, but this “thing” (SC-HT75) has been miserable – four times in the shop and the last would have been very expensive to repair – I told them I’d “cut my losses” and to just dispose of this “piece of trash.” Twice in the shop – wouldn’t turn on, flashes a code and then turns off- once for DVD player (R&R) – Now they want to put in a DVD control board at incredible expense – I’ll just get another ONKYO and a separate DVD player – No more “anything” with Panasonic name on it – their quality is no longer what it used to be and SAMSUNG is equal or better in HDTV… It’s a shame too. I’ve always liked nearly ANY Panasonic product because I could trust ‘em for quality…no more…

This systems seems nice, looks nice, but is extremely unreliable. After 4 months, it stopped reading disks. The drive motor is cheap and burns out quick. All that fancy design and features means nothing if the disk won’t spin. Panasonic has been using these motors in most of their players. Just avoid the brand name.

Like many reviewers have stated, mine worked fabulously at first. My only complaint since the beginning was that the disk actions were too slow (changing disks and reading disks). But one month shy of 3 years old, it gave the ‘F61′ power error and died. I could get it fixed, but it makes me wonder what part of it may break next…

Just as many here have written–if you get two years you are doing well. Right at the 2 yr mark my system which is used maybe once a month will not read the discs. Now to make things even more irritating–it will read some discs sometimes. However, it is getting worse and I came looking for reviews and reading I have now learned this is a common problem and now realize I will have to purchase a new system.

This system is dis-continued and while it maynot have been the most expensive it was not cheap at 300 plus. Maybe I am old fashioned but I really think that for the money it should last more than two yrs at miminal use.

I purchased an a really cheap 60$ off brand system for my elderly mother who plays it constantly and is far from careful with her DVDs and yet hers is still going 2 yrs later and mine isnt?

Panasonic is not the brand it once was. I chose this unit because Panasonic at one time was one of the best.
BUYER BEWARE–they are no longer a TOP brand.
